Reed Crandall's classic Captain Daring pirate stories from the golden age of comics collected into one volume! Boardman Books' "character" collections bring together the adventures of rather obscure golden ago comic book characters in single volumes. The point of the volumes is not to focus on a particular artist but to rediscover a character generally lost to comics fandom. Stories are reproduced from vintage originals from the collection of the publisher (and other sources) with only rudimentary cleaning to make the art more legible and therefore suffer all the drawbacks that implies. If you are looking for an exposition, or diatribe, on this artist or that, these books are not the place to find it. However, if you wish thrilling adventures as only comic books can convey, these might be the publications for you.

Captain Daring Reed Crandall Matthew H Gore 9780692311424 Books

One would like to be able to get excited by this book devoted to Reed Crandall, but it's another example of the cash grab approach to classic comic book reprinting. All of the pages here were taken from scans readily available on the web, and nothing was done to improve them. As a result, the quality ranges from a muddy mess to almost mediocre. Devoid of an introduction or other scholarship, no effort was made to include anything in the form of contextual material on Crandall, the title/character, or this period in comics history. Don't let the cover of the book fool you; nothing inside looks anywhere near that well reproduced. With less than 100 pages of actual comics, it's no bargain either, even if the reproduction had been better than substandard.

A few conscientious publishers are trying to honor the legacies of these bygone artists, but this is NOT an example of one of them. Much better off finding the scans on the web that this publisher pilfered on your own, and supporting publishers like IDW, Classic Comics Press, and Lost Art Books who have all done admirable jobs of reviving similar work by these forgotten greats.

Captain Daring Reed Crandall Matthew H Gore 9780692311424 Books Reviews

I'm guessing that "Bibliophile" neither read the book's description nor looked at the interior preview before purchasing this title. The publisher states up front exactly what the contents are and the preview allows a potential buyer to look at them before pulling the trigger on a purchase. The point here is not to provide a look into the heart and mind of artist Reed Crandall, whose best work was for E.C. anyway, but to shine a little much deserved light on a character who has sadly slipped into comic book obscurity. Certainly, there are some big-time comic book "reprinters" out there who lavish time and PhotoShop attention on to their materials before going to press, but not one of them are ever likely to even glance at a tiny property like Captain Daring and give it a second thought. So, the few score of us who want to thrill to the good Captain's adventures should take a back seat until someone with a major production budget deems him worthy? No! This isn't a perfect volume by any means but it's a fun read for the fraction of the price of just one of the original comics. Now, if someone would just collect The Whip!
I really enjoyed this collection! As one reviewer pointed out, it may not be "perfect," but the publisher is up front about the varying quality at the beginning of the book. Whatever one thinks of the reproduction quality, these stories are a blast to read! As to the other reviewer's claim that these scans are all readily available on the internet, who has the time to go searching for the stories all over the internet (not to mention the time it would take to make sure you're reading them in order)? Not me. Some of us still prefer pages to computer screens anyway, and Mr. Gore has already done the collecting and ordering for us here. I say thanks, and good job!

Two caveats that kept me from giving the book a five star rating
1. One of the stories ("Disaster on the Sea — Disaster on the Land") is actually missing the final three pages.
2. The claim on the cover that these were stories by Reed Crandall is what first drew me in and, consulting the contents page, all but two of the stories do credit him as artist. However, although these are the same art credits that were listed on the Grand Comics Database at the time of publishing, the art (some of the pencils and much of the inks) does not appear to be Crandall throughout. If one compares the art in the first story (undeniably glorious Crandall through and through) to some of the later stories credited to him, it's just not quite up to snuff (did I just make a pirate joke?) as far as being 100% Reed Crandall. Indeed, multiple Captain Daring art credits on GCD have since been updated with other inker information, or occasionally just question marks to show that it is not certain that Crandall did the art at all.

That being said, I found Captain Daring to be an incredibly fun character no matter who was drawing, and still wholeheartedly recommend this collection!
